Mogadishu skyline transformed in Somalia development boom
It is more than a decade since the armed group al-Shabab was pushed out of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu.
Since then, a relative calm has returned to the coastal city.
And now an economic boom is fuelling a surge in property development.
Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi reports from Mogadishu, Somalia.

MOGADISHU CITY HAS UNBELIEVABLY CHANGED. (Shocked Kenyan)
Mogadishu city. Allow me to present to you the new Mogadishu City. When other Africans hear about Mogadishu, all they can conjure inside their minds are images of desolate buildings, gun-toting militias, and chaos. In fact, for many Kenyans like me, the thought of going to Mogadishu sends shivers down the back. What if I told you that all of that was a lie? Maybe the fear was justified in the past. But as we speak, the new Mogadishu City is a sight to behold.

Somalia on the brink - living with terror and violence
With no state, no public amenities, no bank system, a scarce army, an under-equipped police force, and almost daily attacks, the majority of Somalia is completely out of government control. Despite the presence of an international African army, AMISOM, the country lives under the rule of armed Islamists who take orders from Al Qaeda.
Every year, the international community spends billions on aid, and yet the country is weaker than ever. Rather than benefiting citizens, the majority of international aid money is tied up in astronomical security costs, or is embezzled by a corrupt political class. It is estimated that less than 20% of aid money actually reaches its intended recipients.

THE SHOCKING FALL AND RISE OF MOGADISHU : SOMALIA.
#mogadishu #somalia
The mere mention of Mogadishu, the Somali capital, conjures up disturbing images: pockmarked shells of roofless buildings. Or the sound of pickup trucks equipped with heavy machine guns and manned by khat-chewing militiamen who race through rubble-strewn streets amid makeshift camps of destitute families displaced by the chaos and carnage of a civil war that has been raging for decades.
Today a new Mogadishu is rising from Somalia’s turbulent past. From the time that Al-Shabaab militants pulled out of the city in August 2011, the Somali capital has been undergoing an economic renaissance. Bold infrastructure projects are reshaping the cityscape, providing state-of-the-art facilities for both residents and visitors. The skyline is changing, and the city is becoming a ma...

It is one of the fastest growing African cities. I can almost guarantee you that in the next few years, Mogadishu might be the biggest city in Africa, giving competition to Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Lagos. It will be in the league of Dubai and other fast-rising cities in the east. The pace at which the rebuilding of Somalia is happening is mind-boggling. Can you tell that a few years ago, these nice, beautiful skyscrapers did not even exist in Mogadishu? This is a true testament to the Somali people's resolve to get past the obstacles that pulled them down in the past and forge a new future.
You might not know it, but allow me to break it to you. Mogadishu is one of the places with a lot of opportunities for Africans to work and live. Right now, as we speak, there are thousands of Kenyans who have already established themselves in Mogadishu, especially in the education and hospitality industries. and they leave without fear. and I'm not just talking about Kenyan Somalis.
If things go the way they are going, Eastleigh in Nairobi might relocate to Mogadishu. The opportunities in Mogadishu are seemingly limitless. of the positive aspects of Mogadishu is safety. personal safety, that is. I cannot conceive of walking around in Nairobi without fear of my personal belongings being stolen or being mugged. In Mogadishu, you can even walk in the dead of the night without any fear of being attacked by robbers. Of course, the threat of al-Shabaab exists and attacks have been known to happen sporadically. However, there is an increasingly palpable sense of security that is manifesting in Mogadishu that has never been seen before. The police force of Mogadishu is overworked. One very good reason for this sense of security is, of course, Islam. Islam is the religion of Somalia and it dictates social norms and behavior. Being a very religious country, theft is heavily frowned upon.
In the hospitality industry of Mogadishu, there is immense potential for growth. The city boasts some of the best beaches in Africa. Many of them are undergoing massive development. In a few years to come, tourists will be coming to Mogadishu to swim in the turquoise waters of Mogadishu's beaches and take long walks along its white sandy beaches.
The city is gearing up to become one of Africa's best commercial centers due to its strategic harbour that will facilitate trade from all over the world. Indeed, Mogadishu will be the new Dubai of Africa.

The skyline is changing, and the city is becoming a magnet for forward-thinking individuals and organizations.
A vibrant night life has returned to the streets of the city’s once-fashionable Shingaani district, and families and young couples have reclaimed Lido Beach as their weekend playground. A peace garden in the heart of Mogadishu boasts cafés, two football fields and park benches where Somalis can read local newspapers or exchange the latest political gossip.
Mogadishu is in recovery mode. The city is like a patient who was in a deep coma, and then suddenly he moves his fingers and opens his eyes. Now he is moving his limbs and unfolding his legs. With a newfound sense of stability, businesses are flourishing, and entrepreneurs are taking center stage. The city's strategic location on the coast is opening doors for trade, making it a hub of economic activity that's hard to ignore.
The outside world is beginning to notice. In a recent survey of the world’s fastest-growing cities with a population of at least 1 million, the US-based consulting firm Demographia ranked Mogadishu second, behind only the Indonesian city of Batam. Demographia estimated Mogadishu’s annual growth rate at 6.9%, fueled in large part by the return of growing numbers of diaspora Somalis who have come home to reconnect with their roots and explore investment opportunities following improvements in the security situation.
A stroll through some of its once-devastated districts reveals how much Mogadishu has changed. The central business district is once again a beehive of commercial activity. Some of the street scenes along the city’s main boulevard, Maka-Al-Mukarama, could match any in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania or Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.
I am genuinely surprised by the unrelenting spirit of Somali people. I look into the future and see a thriving Mogadishu that embodies the resilient spirit of its inhabitants. That is the city that the current generation of Somalis will hopefully bequeath to their children and grandchildren.
